File Transfer Throttling
For my birthday in July I decided to get a MyBook World Edition which is just a designated file server. It has 500GB of storage space and is attached to my network via CAT5. The nice thing about it is that I can set up user accounts on it so everyone at my apartment can back up their data on it through our network. Unfortunately we're all on wireless... 802.11b that is. We lost our 802.11g router when the fourth roommate moved out last year. This means that we have very limited bandwidth at our disposal. Streaming even just a few songs from YouTube or MySpace or Yahoo Radio can turn our network into what is, seemingly, a dial-up connection. Every so often I'll have a couple gigabytes of data that I need to transfer at one time. This is problematic because I can't transfer large files while I'm streaming music or browsing the web. As I was transferring this large file, I was slowly making my way around the internet, trying to find a way that I could throttle my network transfer speed in Windows Vista. For the record, my search found nothing of value. But as I was finishing up my search, the large amount of bandwidth being used caused me to become disconnected from my network with only 8 minutes to go on my file transfer. This is when I realized that transfering files in Windows was completely and utterly rediculous. Guess what? Resuming a file is completely out of the question -- even if it is a few Gigabytes in size. Thanks Microsoft.
Update: 12/05/07
I've been having problems with my MyBook file server recently. I originally noticed the problem when I was streaming MP3s from it because they would become very choppy and cut out frequently. Just the past few days I haven't been able to connect to the server at all. I did a little investigation and found that the orange light on the Network Interface Card is orange. The second one still flashes the regular green color though. I'm assuming this means that the NIC is having hardware issues because I already tried swapping the cable with another. This frustrates me. I hope I still have my warranty. Also, I have been looking to get a cheap Linksys WRT54G (or GL) so I can run DD-WRT and once again have a stable network connection. Being a poor college student really takes the fun out of life sometimes. Oh well, until next time.
